52 Pick-me-up: Sunflower / Joy

•••
It's Sunflower week on 52 Pick-me-up!
Also Sunflower (ie Golden) Yellow is Coreopsis seen here in an old photo from when I lived on Hudson Street in Pasadena (1988?-93):
Another flower this same color is the California Poppy, a flower that never fails to give me great Joy.
If you live in SoCal, now is the time to plant it, before the rains start.
Hopefully, there WILL be rains this year.
(From the same garden)
It's also the color used on highways and streets:
My street was recently repainted.  I witnessed it.
This was my "Halloween" outfit for both Thursday and Saturday.
I bought the scarf exactly 25 years ago in Patzquaro, Mexico.
The tee has a graphic reminiscent of a Día de los Muertos sugar skull.
It's from Bleeding Heart Bakery, Chicago, now closed.
Today is Día de Muertos, a day to remember loved ones who have passed.
Both pictures from the ofrenda at the Farmers Market in Mar Vista.
I'm taking my joyful self on over to Patti's Visible Monday.
How about you?

Have a Happy Sunshiny Day

My mad hunt for yellow had me thinking about smiley faces.
Not only do I have a good amount of smiley tees:
I have a collection of smily stuff, mostly displayed in the bathroom.
A very small section of the collection.
It may not be the Smiley Face Museum, but it's close!

Here is the purple smiley tee, Severo found in NC -- it advertises a club in Atlanta, the "Have a Nice Day Cafe"
This is the back
What adult wears a smiley tee to work? Raises hand.
With a bodycon dress? Raises hand.
Purple leggings? Why yes, I did.
And tie-dye print scarf? Thank you Bella.
And matching socks!!!!! (They were 99¢ at Jack's in NYC)

This outfit qualifies for many linkups:
Patti's Visible Monday
Maricel's TARDIS Tuesday
Catherine's I Will Wear What I Like

Plus, SUNSHINE YELLOW, yo. "Have a nice day!" :-)

52 Pick-me-up: Sun / Miracle / Reward

•••
Ah, forgive me while I have a yellow meltdown.
[see more of this mess on The Glutton, where I'm still documenting my decluttering process]
It's the start of seven weeks of yellow tones here on 52 Pick-me-up.
The colors are named by Tori Hartman for her Chakra Wisdom Oracle. [links here]
The interpretations are my own.
Here's what I decided back in June:
Sun, Topaz, Sunflower, Lemonade, Canary, Bronze, Gold
This week our prompt is Sun Yellow. How is that different from Canary?
Here's what Tori says: Sun Yellow is the brightest and boldest. Canary Yellow is yellow in its purest form.

OK, so I still have four weeks to get something sewn up in my 90's yellow, black, and red plaids:
The item on top is a sweater that I'm going to turn into a skirt.
The other two are both woven yardage, the middle has spandex added.
That leaves me with the Sun Yellow jingle jangle skirt, which I still haven't decided what to do with.
Here it is, as a skirt, in days of yore:
With the famous Traveling Yellow Skirt!
"It makes a lovely bed"
"But I like the plaids more."
Yes, Mel's "Miracle" Traveling Freak Show Skirt is Sun Yellow.
Have you taken a spin with it?
Leave your link below, if you have.
If you haven't, contact Melanie. [The instructions are over on this page]. It is SO REWARDING!

52 Pick-me-up: Plaid

CREATED/ PURCHASED/ PURLOINED/ LINKS/
This coming Friday, October 3, is Plaidurday, a day to celebrate wearing plaid.
Why not wear it all week?
Here, I'm wearing a summer plaid, printed on cotton. It's still too hot in Southern CA to wear flannel or wool.
Have some plaid in your closet? Link and tell!

A Dab of Yellow

PURCHASED/ LINKS/
Yellow -- some love it, some not so much.
If you want to join in on this week's 52 Pick-me-up Yellow challenge but will end up looking jaundiced if you wear it, how about trying an accessory or two? There's always GOLD, that qualifies!

I'm featuring a scarf and a necklace that I got at Carmen & Ginger's in Providence. It's a really cute shop in the Arcade downtown. If you're in Providence, check it out!
Why was I drawn to the yellow?
The scarf is a classic nylon burnout Florida souvenir square:
The necklace is just plain weird:
Nautical and yellow. Yup.
And how about a look at that painting that I match:
Santa Barbara Night, oil on canvas, 36.5 x 18", 1975
It's vintage Anne M Bray and part of my Mom's collection. (She has a lot of my work!)

One more day to add your Yellow to this gathering of lovelies:

52 Pick-me-up: Yellow Fever

PURCHASED/ SWAPPED/
After last week's tree challenge, I've got an easy one for you. Wear something yellow.
Look deep into the pansy face...
I wonder if Severo has been watering...
One of "those" mornings, many weeks ago.
Started with this (maybe I kept the shoes and socks on and donned last week's ensemble).
Did not like how I looked in the photo and the zipper in the skirt was stabbing me.
Next try, maybe the next day. Almost OK.
Winner!
Had forgotten how much I liked this Desigual shirt.
It came along on the road trip.
Is your yellow mellow? Link and tell!

Sock It To Me, Geometrically

PURCHASED/ PURLOINED/ PRESS SAMPLE*/ LINKS/

This post was prompted (harhar) by Maricel asking about "Geometric" prints and my own confusion over the order of the 52 Pick-me-up prompts. I messed up on the graphic calendar (that gave me mild bursitis, btw) and "Go Green" HAD to be during the week with St. Patrick's Day and it wasn't. I shuffled around the order of the challenges but was still looking at the old calendar. Are you more confused now? Yeah, me too.

Moving along, here are some geometric socks that inspired my look:
Happy Socks. Some of the greatest graphic socks around.
(not sponsored by them but I should be)
And aren't the pansies sweet? They really liked the deluge of rain that we got last week.
*c/o Capwell & Co. necklace, which you can hardly see
just doing my FTC due diligence here, folks
It's still Sock Inspiration week on 52 Pick-me-up.
If you don't have any weird socks or tights, click here for some inspiration.
You don't have to PURCHASE anything.
Just drag the image of your choice to your desktop (or make a screen capture) and use it to compile your outfit.

I'm taking my crazy legs over to Patti's Visible Monday. Can't miss me in this CMYK ensemble.
You have until very early Wednesday morning (PDT -- did you remember to change your clocks forward today?) to link up here.

52 Pick-me-up: Dress Like a Libation

PURCHASED/ PURLOINED/ LINKS/
Here is this week's 52 Pick-me-up directive: Dress like your favorite cocktail.

Can you guess mine?
Hint:
photo by Sarah of Call Me Fudge
I'm a (virgin) Tequila Sunrise!
This was my drink of choice when I was going out to see LA pop shows in the 90s.
That is, if I bothered to pay for a beverage. Usually I didn't drink anything, so that I could avoid nasty rest rooms.

Here's Call Me Fudge's Tequila Sunrise recipe:

TEQUILA SUNRISE
(makes 1 drink)

2 oz. tequila
4 oz. orange juice
3/4 oz. grenadine

1.  Fill a high ball glass with ice.  Pour in tequila and orange juice.

2.  Slowly pour in grenadine and allow it to separate and settle at the bottom.

3.  Stir before sipping!

I found Sarah's site through a Google Image search. What a fun blog!

OK, put down that drink, link, and tell!

Mellow Yellow Traveling Skirt

LINKS/ PURCHASED/ GIFTED/ LOANED/ PRESS SAMPLE*

I got my chance to cavort with the Traveling Yellow Skirt. Launched by Melanie in November 2012, it's since been on a world tour. I paired it with my own Indian jingle-jangle yellow skirt. On top is the poncho added by Tamera.
In my hair is a crocheted flower that I got at the Granny Squared event at the Craft and Folk Art Museum last May.
Since it's a "thing on my head" I'll be joining Style Crone's next Hat Attack in October.
*my sunglasses frames are c/o DITTO
Meanwhile, it's Visible Monday time. Go take a look!

Also, I'll put in a pitch for this week's 52 Pick-me-up challenge, United Nations. I figure since the yellow skirt originated in Canada, has already been to Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and several stops in the US and Canada, it's doing its part for international relations.
If you'd like to join on the Yellow Skirt fun, click here for more information.

The Duro Olowu x JCP Shirt Goes for Its Audition

CREATED/ PURCHASED/ GIFTED/ LINKS
Remember Jan in her Duro Olowu shirt?
[Jan won the "longest legs" prize in the April sketchathon, btw]

I was entranced by it, but couldn't buy it online ("sold out").
Imagine my glee when Jan said she'd pick me up one when she was next "in town".
Jan lives near Fort Smith, Arkansas so there was lots of Olowu inventory at her JCP.

Eventually, the planets aligned and it arrived on my doorstep.
OH HAPPY DAY!

Next, what to mix it with?
I have matching socks!
I piled some candidates next to it...
Then I tried things on.
#1, the Calvin Klein bubble dress (07 sold as a swim coverup)
with yellow tights -- looks good but problematic:
very warm, dress won't stay in place
#2, 80s neon yellow bubble knit and the socks
I'd probably wear this with burg/brown/black capris or tights added
#3, for giggles, I tried it with my Indian jingle jangle skirt.
Looking a bit lost in all that fabric.
The legs win!

Alas, my right arm is swollen, and the right shirt sleeve is skin tight, so I'll have to wait to wear this. BooHoo! This just might inspire me to get back to taking care of my arm issues. I might think of some other combos in the interim as well!

Jan, thank you again for the shirt! I adore it!

Throwing Caution To the Wind

Close up of my skirt print. In my mind, it's all the road sign colors:
Stop Red
Exit Green
Info Blue
and
Caution Yellow
I wore this for both Qi Gong and a routine checkup appointment at Harbor/UCLA on Friday, it worked out great.
Not so great was the interminable wait to see my doctor -- 3.5 hours!!!!
(I'm on the dole, so I pay with my time). I became REALLY REALLY bored, so I played with my kaleidoscope app:

upper right is original shot used [same as close up] to make these images
and took random photos:

Actual face time with the doctor? Maybe 10 minutes!
Ah, Harbor General, teaching me patience yet again.
ps: I'm fine!

Linking up with Patti's Visible Monday. Because it's Monday!
