10 on the 10th: June Loves

10 on the 10th is a fun monthly thing instigated by Marsha In the Middle.

Her prompt for this edition:

Instead of just answering some questions or such, let’s try photos of ten things we really like or even love.

I'm all for the love! And not just things!

1. Must be Severo!
2. Mr Lou
3. Morning ritual: Earl Grey loose tea, Hi-Lo souvenir mug, bakelite handled spoon
4. Celebrating my birthday with Ube Macapuno cake
5. Fluevog shoes, making repeats, embroidering them
Bonus: will be creating and exhibiting a total of 50!
The show will be in Pacifica, CA (near SF) in September
6. Road trips, then making art
This is 1-10, West Texas and will soon be available in a flash sale for $100
7. Textile Arts LA group
I'm curating a TALA group show for a pop-up art fair in Torrance July 11-13!
8. Music! In this case, Nada Surf in 2024
and in 2011
9. Fragrant flowers! Check my IG to see what happened when I took this photo...
10. Russel Wright dishes.
Some pieces are from my childhood, though Mom is still holding on to one forest green serving bowl.

10 on the 10th: May Questions

10 on the 10th is a fun monthly thing instigated by Marsha In the Middle

This month, she has questions!

1. Would you rather live in a tiny house in the country or on a boat on a river or lake?
I'd like to try the boat on a lake concept. Waking up to a horizon of water would be glorious!
Piseco Lake, NY available!

2. Would you rather be a character in a Shakespeare play or a Stephen King movie adaptation?
Shakespeare for sure.

3. Would you rather your kitchen was full of all black appliances or all pink appliances?
Pink! There are lots of shades of pink and it doesn't necessarily have to be Barbie pink.
Look what I found!
source
4. Would you rather be allergic to cake or chips?
Would it be a mild reaction or near death?

5. Would you rather have a five minute conversation with your past self or your future self?
Past self! This girl especially... it would take more than five minutes though!
1978
6. Would you rather be rich or famous?
Rich in friends, rich in memories

7. Would you rather drive a brand new big, big truck or a slightly used small car?
I will drive my 2009 Prius until it stops working (230,000+ miles and counting). Then I'll get another.

8. Would you rather live with your parents or your kids?
Since I'm a cat mom, I'll go with the cat kid (who's an old cat man)

9. Would you rather have an ugly tattoo where everyone could see it or a beautiful one that no one could see?
I'll put a temporary one wherever. Nothing permanent.

10. Would you rather eat a peanut butter and Spam sandwich or a strawberry jelly and lettuce sandwich?
I think with enough tweaking of condiments, you could get an Indonesian vibe going on your PBnSpamwich.

10 on the 10th: Ten Summer Memories

10 on the 10th is a fun monthly thing instigated by Marsha In the Middle.
For July, Marsha asked us for ten summer memories.

1971: that summer I started painting my toenails red
I wrote about it in 2012!

1972: that summer I took a printmaking class
Woodblock, Dry-Point Etching, Silkscreen, Lithography (with stones!) - a great class through what was then called Munson Williams Proctor Institute, in Utica, NY. It kept me busy.

1975: that summer I mended the quilt (and I'm still mending it)
The quilt origin story
Current mending saga - patch by patch

Mr Lou, the Anti-mender. He's getting ready to bite me.

1976 that summer I backpacked in the Wind Rivers for 10 days
No walk in the park! Photo will come later. Too lazy to look.

1978 that summer in a Upper West Side NYC apartment on the ground floor
and there was a fire in an upper floor and I was taking pictures out the window of "the pretty light"
No image, sorry, still lazy.

1979 that summer of the ill-fated hitchhike around nova scotia honeymoon
If only I'd known it was a harbinger of things to come...
I'll just leave you with a piece of plein air art I did then... Nope, later.

1980 or 81 the summer of Banshee Barbie
Chloe's Barbie was missing her head. So we crafted one out of tinfoil.
Oooooooh! Banshee Barbie!

1994 that summer I learned to paint in the dark in Bennington, VT
It was a week? 2 week? workshop taught by Rafael Ferrer on the campus of Bennington College.
I was super productive.

1996 that summer I lost my mind and lived in Indianapolis for 6 weeks
I turned 40. What can I say? I was thinking with parts lower than my brain!
I got some good paintings done in my basement studio though...

199? that summer I went to NYC and my hair smelled like an old tennis shoe
[Severo and I can't remember what year this occured. Have to consult my old photos].
I'll eventually go into this on my newish Substack Notes. It's a good story!

10 on the 10th: Ten Things for 2024

Answering 10 questions! This is a fun monthly thing instigated by Marsha In the Middle.

For January, Marsha wants us to make plans:
1. Continue to sketch pastel landscapes. A 100 Day challenge started 11/17/23

2. Relocate bags of scraps from the living room to the art closet. This means I have to find a home for everything in the art closet.
3. Do an art fair. stARTup Dallas? Other Fair LA? Superfine SF?

4. Drive across the southern edge of Canada en route to my 50th high school reunion in Troy, NY.

5. Get road trip maps collaged into a blank book BEFORE the trip. No repeat of 2014 and 2019.
Journal it in real time this time. (Finished the 2014 book on 5/26/22)

6. Become a certified Feng Shui consultant! (Ha. You didn't expect THAT one, did you!)

7. Apply to at least one juried art show and one grant every month.

8. On that note, make "Bloom" art for "Bloom" exhibition, application due 1/19.

9. 26 Fluevog sketches and patterns for the annual A-Z Blogging challenge in April.
Upload to Redbubble.

10. 100 more subscribers to my art email. WHAT? You're not on the A-list? Join here!

Be sure to check out Marsha’s post and her link party for more responses!

May I? 10 on the 10th

Answering 10 questions! This is a fun monthly thing instigated by Marsha In the Middle.
Link to Marsha's answers for this month.
1. Can you whistle?
Yes! One of those ear-piercing NYC Taxi hailing whistles!
My pal Shawn (a native of NYC) taught me in 9th grade.

2. Can you touch your toes flat to the ground?
Yes, I just tried. I had to bend my knees a teeny tiny bit.
[Ha! can't post the video because Blogger thinks it's obscene!]
3. Can you remember all of your teachers from Kindergarten to graduation?
No. 1st through 4th grade are lost to the mists of time.
I only remember my Kindergarten teacher because there's a photo:
4. Can you ride a motorcycle?
Conceivably yes, as a passenger, but I'd rather not.
My cousins were very much into motorbikes as young teens. I only rode with them a couple of times.

5. Can you groom a dog?
Maybe, again, I'd rather not. I can groom a cat!

6. Can you remember the first vacation you ever went on?
Do family trips to summer lodgings count? The first house I remember (I was five?) I later randomly revisited when I was fourteen with friends that lived on the farm. It was an eerie experience!

7. Can you create things from scratch (knit, paint, weld, etc.)?
8. Can you wire an outlet?
Maybe? There's a YouTube for that!

9. Can you remember your first job?
Unforgettable! I delivered pizza for Skip Perry's Pizza in Goleta, CA. I got to know the greater Santa Barbara area really well. Delivering to UCSB students was the worst.
"Ham, Pepperoni, Bell Pepper Pizza" Lithograph, 1975
10. Can you upholster a chair?
I upholstered a chair and an ottoman once with canvas that I silkscreened.
[Can't find photos]

Lately, I've been visibly mending the couch. Some parts are surviving Mr Lou the Antimender better than others
(that is carpeting on arm on left which Lou has turned into a yeti).

Mosaics in Philadelphia

Mosaics in the South Street neighborhood of Philadelphia.
Created by Isaiah Zagar
View of the exterior of the museum, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens,
dedicated to one immersive space that he created.

We took a quickie east coast ramble at the end of October and Philadelphia was one of our stops.
See more pics of the trip here.

Shining Brightly at the Old Broads Art Reception

Shelbee inspired me to create a blog post. Woohoo!
She and Nancy are hosting their monthly Good Buy, Good-bye series with the topic Sparkles for December.

I donned some sparkly accessories for a recent art reception.

I was thrilled to have a reason to get dressed up!
It's been eons since an outfit photo has occurred.
Garment/Pattern array. I got the metallic scarf from Ideeli
(anyone remember that online designer closeout site?)
Devil shoes! The Fluevog Maha

The exhibition:
Old Broads @RAM [Riverside Art Museum] is up until January 2, 2022

“In most human endeavors, experience is a highly valued attribute. Not too many people ask for the ‘new guy’ to perform a car repair and the demand for newly minted neurosurgeons surely does not outstrip supply. In the performing and written arts, the wunderkind who is worthy of an Oscar, Emmy, or Pulitzer is celebrated but recognized as a rarity. In the visual arts, however, this construct is turned on its head. Gallerists are routinely asked the age of the artists whose work they are promoting; in addition, print media abounds with articles lamenting the difficulty female artists face in getting their work shown.

“So, in a region where 20-somethings are botoxed and 30-somethings routinely get ‘a little work done,’ whose dominant industry is peddling our youth-obsessed, airbrushed culture to the rest of the world, what is a woman of a certain age to do? ‘Old Broads’ is a collective of 30 female/female-identifying visual artists over the age of 50, working in the greater Los Angeles area. The show seeks to showcase and celebrate artists who bring a lifetime of experience and experiences to their work. Our aim is to promote each other, poke fun at prevalent stereotypes, and have a damned good time doing it.”
—the Old Broads

At the reception:

With Marthe Aponte and our art

With Adeola Davies-Aiyeloja and our art

My art piece in the center includes gold brocade
My sparkly purse joined the fun
I got this at Pic N Save in 2000(?). $5.00. A keeper!

A bunch of us had dinner at Mario's Place afterwards. Outstanding!
As they say, "the Mission Inn is across from us".
Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Black and White and Scrappy Squares

My posts are all about the Scrappy Squares these days, aren't they?
Can't be helped, they're top of mind, as I do all the prep for the 50|50 group show they'll be in.
Here's my "Title" page:

click to embiggen
I did do one totally black and white Scrappy, the "Leo

Instead, I want to highlight the "Stephanie", for which I destroyed two skirts:
"Stephanie" was named for a certain person who wants a certain fabric used herein.
Stephanie is on socials and keeps her ID on the downlow, hence no link.

One of the skirts, before destruction:
It's fraternal twin, in a more deconstructed state:
sometimes, in the frenzy of creation, I forget to take the "before" shots

So, what's the back story on these skirts?

I got them both at a place in Venice called DBA (that resold designer discards like Ross, but not a chain), sometime when I was already working at "The Panty Factory" (my nickname for the day job, designing prints for underwear and loungewear). Maybe 2006? The floral caught my eye as a potential panty print, the dot, well, polkadots! They were only $12, and a nice 100% cotton percale.

When I stopped wearing most of my skirts (too many cupcakes), I put the dot skirt up for sale on Poshmark. The floral never got posted, not sure why.

And then the Scrappy Squares got hungry for fresh textiles, and, riiiiiiiiip went the skirts.
As I said in the previous post, everything is fair game in Scrappy Square creation!
