An Over the Top Outfit, Deconstructed

I'm going to a Zandra Rhodes book signing on Wednesday.
On Friday I road tested an outfit.
Let's study what's going on.

The pink fluffiness is a rectangle of Mongolian Lamb. Maybe originally intended as a rug?
It was displayed on the floor at the Flitterman Collection studio sale:
It was love at first sight, but it took me several circuits of the room to commit.
No regrets!
Next layer is the pink mystery fiber sequinned ombre scarf that I got at a Tibetan shop in Williamsburg, NY in January 2012. That MIGHT have been the moment I was finally comfortable wearing Barbie Pink.
On my extremities:
chenille armlettes cut from socks,
striped socks from Uniqlo (obtained at a store opening on deep discount).
Neon Yellow Fluevog Aimees on my feet.

Base layers: royal blue cheap Chinese high-low dress:
And last but not least, the Crazy Legs Leggings from Society6!

Somebody (on Facebook? on Instagram?) wanted to see a closeup of the print on the leggings:
It's a digital composite of three 60's prints which I insterted into the Crown of Thorns quilting pattern.

Let's continue deconstructing!
I couldn't find the red ground paisley vest (in a box somewhere), here are the other two sources:
Pink, mustard, and white smock that is "in work" (I cut off the yoke).
You've seen this neon shirt before!

Digital Catwalk: Jaye

Jaye found me on Google+  during the height of my Mug Mania last week. 
She put in a request for a sketch so that she could purchase an art print and a mug.

Here's how I responded:
Sure, I'd be happy to sketch you! Most of my fashion sketches are done from looking at blog outfit posts. I don't exactly copy the photo but interpret the look. You can either point me towards one of your posts or email me a photo. Or even send me a "wish list" look!
When I've got the sketch finished, I'll post it on Society6 and then you order what you want. If you want a product other than the mug, let me know. They all require differently formatted files.
My sketching turnaround will be four days. If you catch me on the weekend, even faster.

This was my first sketch using a more "curvy" drawing template:
Yep, I trace my Digital Catwalk sketches over a nude template. This is how I drew croquis figures back in school and all through my fashion design career.

This is the crazy-looking "supermodel" figure I've been using for my drawings this year:


I'll do a post showing how my fashion sketching has morphed over the years. Maybe next week -- have to dig around and find the old stuff that's pre-digital. Out in the garage. Scary.

Linda Fargo as seen in Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's

I was given a free ticket to an advance screening of Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's, a wonderful documentary all about that Grand Dame of NYC department stores, Bergdorf Goodman.
Linda Fargo, with her silver bob and calm demeanor, caught my attention. She has amazing style! They must have followed her around the whole day that she wore this dress, you see a lot of it.

This film is a must-see for all fashion aficionados. Along with lots of top tier designers as talking heads, it goes into the history of the store. You also get a behind-the-facade look at the design and creation of Bergdorf's famous Christmas windows. And then there's Betty, the "director of Solutions" [personal shopper]. Oh my goodness!

It opens tomorrow, in a few select venues in NYC and LA. Definitely click on this link, to see clips (some that aren't even in the movie!), read bios, etc. I think the DVD will be an item for my Amazon Wish List -- I want to watch it again and again!

 Note: my free ticket did not influence my review. I probably wouldn't pay $15 to watch it once in a theater, but would definitely Netflix it, and plan to purchase the DVD. I like the movie that much.

My grandmother's hand tailored dress from British Hong Kong

The First IFB Project Task:

Find a prized possession a family member gave you. Something you hold near and dear to your heart. Whether it be a necklace, a blouse or even a piece of furniture. What makes it’s special to you?
My Aunt Ricky gave me this when I moved to Manhattan in 1977. It was her mother's (my paternal grandmother) and I think Aunt Ricky got it in the 60s. I'm not sure when my grandmother had this made. I would guess the 50s. It fits like a glove.

When I see this dress in the closet I think of my grandmother and how exotic she appeared to me. She passed away when I was very young (five or six) but I remember her distinctive regal air.

I think we can all agree that technology has become vital to the daily existence of bloggers. Who among us goes a week without playing around with coding, tinkering with our blog design, tweeting, downloading the newest photo apps etc.? Many of us who started out somewhat technology illiterate are now wearing our chic geek badges proudly. Thankfully, forums like IFB exist to nurture and encourage our self education when it comes to tech issues!
