#popforthepeople -- Roy Lichtenstein at the Skirball

Severo and I had a fortuitous alignment of schedules that enabled us to take advantage of Free Museum Day* to visit "Pop for the People: Roy Lichtenstein in L.A" at the Skirball Cultural Center.
We dressed appropriately. My BOOM! tunic caused a ruckus.
The show [up until 3/12/17] features a wide variety of work, from screenprints:
Roy Lichtenstein, Mao, Screenprint, 1971 plus Severo
to garments:
Roy Lichtenstein, Untitled  Shirt, Screenprint, 1979
Roy Lichtenstein, Spray Can Dress, 2011
to large-scale prints:
Our favorite was the interactive installation of Lichtenstein's 3D interpretation of Van Gough's Bedroom at Arles.

The bed was comfy!
Very timely is another interactive piece featuring the Oval Office and speech bubble placards that viewers can photograph. [How did they know? The show opened on October 7, a month before Election Day].

If you happen to find yourself on the west side Friday, February 24, there will be a free special event, Late-Night Lichtenstein, 5-10pm. With swag and music, and the parking is always free!

*Free Museum Day involved over 30 institutions in soCal. Here's a listing of normal free days in the LA region.

Shiny Objects Are Closer Than They Appear

CREATED/ PURCHASED/ GIFTED/ LINKS/
Severo and I both had Saturday off, time for a date!
The night before, I gave him parameters for our breakfast dining: within 3 miles radius of home and before 10am. (It gets crowded in eateries after 10 on the weekend, especially with this glorious weather we've had).
He found a new place, Cafe Buna, in Marina Del Rey. Their prices were a little higher than I like to pay (over $10), but our coffees and breakfasts were great. Only the grits were lackluster, we brought them home for doctoring. Service was fantastic.

After breakfast, Severo asked if it was OK if we made a detour before going home. It was to M Street Bakery on Main Street in Santa Monica for sweets. Let's just say M stands for Mmmmmmmm. The chocolate chip cookies are maybe the best I've had in soCal. They were REALLY good. If I get my act together, I'll go into more detail over on Dessert Safari. Note: we just ate the apple oatmeal cookie and that is great too. Two for two -- we'll be back.

Then we walked and explored Main Street.
Which is where the shiny objects come into play.
Giant shiny fork
Shiny script sign that has seen better days. Severo demonstrates.
We found the best shiny thing of all -- a Christmas tree formed out of shopping carts!
You can find it at the Edgemar complex, 2415 Main St. It was designed by Anthony Schmitt.
Read about it here.

Did I wear something shiny? Sort of.
The skirt with metallic threads that wreaks havoc at airports.
Subtle, to the naked eye.
Metal mix of
copper threads in the skirt and golden dragon brocade.
Dashes of leopard for extra sizzle.

Meanwhile, Mixed Metals fortnight continues. You have PLENTY of time to join the party!
Have something shiny planned for a New Year's Eve party? Do share!

A Date in Highland Park

Severo and I both had Saturday off so we went on a trek to Eagle Rock and Highland Park. A photography show (not that great, so no documentation) in Eagle Rock got us out of the house. Afterwards, Good Girl Dinette in Highland Park was our destination for late lunch and it was fantastic!

Severo ordered:
charred pork rice noodle salad with spring greens,
pickled daikon & carrots,
bean sprouts, basil, and toasted peanuts & shallots
 I ordered:
vegetarian porridge:
brown rice, minced mushroom, napa cabbage, and shallots
roasted oyster mushroom banh mi
served with pickled daikon & carrots, cilantro-maggi mayo,
and spicy fries,
seasoned with chilies, garlic, and cilantro
For dessert:
gateau basque with raspberry jam filling and whipped cream
When we were done, there was a rainbow to the east.
An omen for a happy 2013? Let's hope so!

A Date With the Bangles

Our good friend Derrick Anderson [WARNING this link has sound] plays bass with The Bangles. They headlined a free show in Pershing Square, in downtown LA on Saturday night. Time for another date night out on the town!
Derrick put us on "the list" so we were able to sit in VIP chairs.
We sat in the second row!

They are awed by my brilliance!

We then all went over to see Derrick's room that he was given at the Biltmore.
Patria styled an impromptu photo session with Derrick and his bass
The next album cover?
Thanks, Derrick, for a fun, fun night!

My outfit, one more time:
Neon yellow, red, and paisley -- can't get more Visible than this!
