52 Pick-me-up: 10s (1910s or 2010s)

"LINKS/

It's been a few months (September!) since a historical challenge on 52 Pick-me-up. This week, it's the 10s.
I've been so busy with my Sketchbook Project of maps that I have no inspired outfit to share. I did a quick Pinterest search today for "1910 fashion" and found some goodies. I put my finds on my "Reference for Posts" board.
This image gave me a smile:
Gloria Swanson and Teddy the dog, from 1917
Pinterest linked it to here, and with a little internet sleuthing,
I found that it's a publicity still from the film Teddy at the Throttle.
This post gives more details and provides a YouTube link.

My current bathing suit is very similar, but it's a rare day that you'll see me in it!
Perhaps the headgear doubles as a flotation device. The fur stole is especially useful!

Think first season of Downton Abbey and you'll be on the right track for the 1910s.

I guess for the 2010s, you could look back at a 2010 magazine and see what's in there. Probably not a long enough lapse of time to be meaningful, but maybe you'll find something that we all thought was so cool three years ago and now looks silly.

I'm sure you can all do better than me! Do share your historical adaptations!

My Mildred Pierce Moment

LINKS/ PURCHASED/ GIFTED
When the evenings get balmy, my friends Anita and Russ do movie nights at their home. These are not simple DVDs in the HD-TV affairs. These are old-style 16mm films projected on a screen installed over their pool, with the entire back yard decorated in theme with the film. And we dress the part!

Last night's movie was Mildred Pierce -- the original version starring Joan Crawford.

As the sky grew darker, the viewing started with a few shorts:
Then things took a turn for the noir...

More over on the Glutton, just because.

Here's a great summary of the plot, plus a photo that inspired my look.

Linda Fargo as seen in Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's

CREATED/PRESS/LINKS
I was given a free ticket to an advance screening of Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's, a wonderful documentary all about that Grand Dame of NYC department stores, Bergdorf Goodman.
Linda Fargo, with her silver bob and calm demeanor, caught my attention. She has amazing style! They must have followed her around the whole day that she wore this dress, you see a lot of it.

This film is a must-see for all fashion aficionados. Along with lots of top tier designers as talking heads, it goes into the history of the store. You also get a behind-the-facade look at the design and creation of Bergdorf's famous Christmas windows. And then there's Betty, the "director of Solutions" [personal shopper]. Oh my goodness!

It opens tomorrow, in a few select venues in NYC and LA. Definitely click on this link, to see clips (some that aren't even in the movie!), read bios, etc. I think the DVD will be an item for my Amazon Wish List -- I want to watch it again and again!

Note: my free ticket did not influence my review. I probably wouldn't pay $15 to watch it once in a theater, but would definitely Netflix it, and plan to purchase the DVD. I like the movie that much.

Gift of Glamour

edited by Jennine Jacob
With all the dazzle of this week's Met Gala and the upcoming excitement of the Great Gatsby, this summer is going to be all about glam. Between dressing up, dazzling flapper beading, maxi dresses, it's a sure hit to doll it up during the most casual of months. This week's roundup has just about everything you need to know about looking fabulous, how to find the best deals in most unexpected places and how to shop on the go (without even going into a store.) That's just what we need to get some more outdoor time.
