Bauhaus Beginnings at the Getty

It's the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus and there have been many exhibitions world-wide commemorating this milestone.
Cameron Taylor-Brown organized a tour of Bauhaus Beginnings at the Getty, led by the co-curator Gary Fox.

The tour was fascinating and Gary was most erudite and skilled at presenting the information.

I wish I had taken a wide shot of the space with all the color theory course work. I felt like I was surrounded by all my assignments from Otis Freshman Foundation Design (black and white work) and Color Theory (all those color chips). It bordered on the nightmarish!
Here's an IG post of some students with Gary:

The English translation of the Bauhaus curriculum
(from Instagram because I forgot to take a photo)
I had no idea that the Otis curriculum was so similar! Theresa said it was the same for her, twenty years earlier in 1963.
I guess it's ironic that the school's teachings, in operation for only 14 years, closed by the Nazis in 1933, has universally proliferated the art and design world.
The show closes next week. There's a companion online exhibition which is worth checking out.
There is also a pdf of all the exhibition's wall text.

I posted my "best" photos on IG here:

Album Cover Outfit

I was inspired by an album cover today!

Escape to Paradox Island, by Martin, Luther, Lennon (1999)
has a simple, eye-popping design using magenta and cyan, with some white text.

The inside is equally well executed:
"Armageddon surfer girl, rock on..."

Sig Alert Tank

The Los Angeles Fashion Council is hosting a contest to design a Tee inspired by LA. I thought it'd be a great usage of my piece "Commuter Quilt" that I created a few years ago.
Commuter Quilt, digital print on vinyl, 51 x 35" ©2005-7
This is a digital composite of photos I shot while commuting on the lovely I-10/CA60. Morning eastbound images point to the right, evening westbound point to the left.

Did you ever wonder where the term "Sig Alert" originated? Loyd C. Sigman, a broadcasting engineer, invented a radio and tape recorder to help the police broadcast traffic warnings. Dubbed "Sigman Radio Alerts" and shortened to Sig Alerts, they began in Los Angeles in 1955.

Voting starts on Facebook today. You will need to "Like" the LAFC page to view my entry.

repurposed garments with hidden pocket = new dress

I wanted something easy, loose with a hidden pocket. (The belt rigging for the drains not very comfortable)

used
a new Indian skirt that was too tight in the waist and needed altering anyway
a woven denim/spandex shirt that I don't like so didn't mind cutting it up
soft cotton knit sample yardage from work (intended for mens loungepants or boxers)

I pretty much dove in and cut, shirred the top of the skirt; trimmed off bottom of shirt to make empire style line; folded, cut, sewed sides of pocket; pinned it all together; double checked stacking (I put pocket on wrong, had to fix) sewed. Haven't bothered to add more snaps on skirt half -- using safety pins to hold skirt closed. Don't think I'll wear this after I no longer need the secret pocket... will resew the skirt into something else.

this shows the inside and the pocket
