Colors of the Day Style Challenge #COTDstyle

This week, I discovered a fun Instagram Challenge hosted by @COTDstyle:

Every weekday, Mercedes posts two colors or a color and a pattern for outfit inspiration.

Tuesday was yellow and purple:

I wore purple and green:

One of my favorite aspects of the challenge is finding my lunchtime muse to sketch
(I got tired of sketching myself).

On Tuesday, I sketched @wookie_the_wonder_dog
And on Thursday I went to the art supply store and got some colors that I was lacking, including a decent Royal Purple!

Fashion Challenge: Neon Flashback

I dug a little deeper into the shopping cart of treasure and found a bunch of neon printed items from the 70s. Here is a paisley shell with an unfortunate front zipper (think I'll replace it with an exposed metal zip). I paired it with my yellow 80s bubble nylon/spandex tube dress.
nifty pockets!

Neon paisley, right on!
A loud floral Hawaiian style shirt.

I was curious to see how it went with the shift from Monday...
No doubt you'll see me in this soon!
Something about this appeals -- must be the color combo.
This fabric looks downright sedate after all those others.
The yellow, peach and orange acidly pop against the beige ground --
didn't come through in the photo.
It's a lot of yardage in a giant muumuu... I foresee another new skirt!
Today is the final day of the Fashion Challenge week.
Which look do you think I should submit to Keely for her recap?

Fashion Challenge: Pining for Printed Pants

I envision myself, lounging under the umbrella pool-side, wearing my Pucci palazzo pants, sipping on a virgin mojito...
Source via Lyst*

Then again, I could be in the garden, wearing my Gaultier Monet trousers, stopping for a sip of cool spring water...
Source via Lyst*
Ah, well... The Pucci is actually a skirt and not pants, the Gaultiers are a "bit" on the expensive side ($779)...

So here I am, on the back patio, wearing my Indian hippie skirt that I got in Artesia:
I'm OK with that.
Thus concludes Thursday's Fashion Challenge: Printed Bottoms.

Here are some more printed pants that I found on Lyst*

Fashion Challenge: Tribal Floral #OOTD

"Tribal" is a vague insensitive catch-all adjective that the fashion industry is using for this season's ethnic inspired prints. When I hear "tribal", what first comes to mind to me are black and white/off-white geometrics. Which lead me this morning to to my shopping cart full of treasure gleaned last Friday from Larry's trove of archives.
He had about ten garbage bags that we sorted through. It was exhausting!
[I'll tell you more about that later.]
Alas, the tribal shift was too small.
But, I found this in the cart too!
A Polynisian print muumuu!
Polynesian = "tribal" in my book PLUS it's floral.
Score two points in today's Fashion Challenge.
Ummmm, ready for the luau...
Better!
I chopped off the top and turned it into a skirt.
And look, yesterday's plaid shirt has returned!
It's a mock ikat, which also qualifies as "tribal"

Fashion Challenge: This or That Trends

link
Megan and Keely are at it again! It's Fashion Challenge time!
It's a This or That Trends theme this time around. Here is the breakdown for the week:
I know exactly what I'm wearing tomorrow... must go fix the hem on it.
Will report back tomorrow in the Bold Print!

Fashion Challenge - Stripes: Pattern Max

I wore this to a blogger/fashion event on Thursday night [more on that after I get all the TxSC posts written]. I was very pleased with my combination and had a high school alumnae event today so I wore it again. In this photo I'm carrying my trusty Pantone Tangerine Tango journal that I forgot to take to the Thurs event [doh].
wouldn't say stripes are the focal point here
but they are an important part of the mix
I thought you might like a breakdown of my pattern mixing (which on Thursday I called pattern max). I use pattern on my body like a painter uses tubes of color and I adore mixing (maybe you already figured that out).
Here's one way of doing it:
browns and camels tie it together
And here's my way:
there is some brown in the tunic print
in my mind it matches
Pattern max!

Thus concludes the Stripes Fashion Challenge week held by Megan and Keely. I had a good time choosing stripes with purpose. What'll they think up next?

Fashion Challenge - Stripes: Stripes Thrice

I bought this skirt at Cottage Art
in Artesia yesterday.
Look how nicely it matches my yellow scarf!
don't be surprised if you see this stripe on underwear!
Are you wearing stripes today?
It's not too late to join in!

Fashion Challenge - Stripes: From Artesia to the Ocean

what I wore to meet up with Deborah in Artesia:
the skirt has vertical zig-zag stripes and
small horizontal stripes behind them
I bought this skirt in Artesia at Cottage Art
lunch at Jay Bharat!
I love this sweet
Then, as I was driving home,
I heard the call of the ocean...
"take me to the end...
there...
the Pacific"
It was only 56º at the beach
I improvised with the smiley blanket that lives in the car
here's the whole beach look -- pattern max
Are you wearing stripes today?
It's not too late to join in!

Fashion Challenge - Stripes: In a Brown Study

I am so in love with this Dorothée Bis knit skirt that I picked up at Savers in my thrifty shopping spree when I was in Austin. Megan and Keely are hosting a Fashion Challenge themed Stripes and this seemed like a good contribution.

It's not too late to join in!

Layer Up - Dress over Pants

I was wearing this look back in the 60s!
Didn't wear this on Saturday
for the final day of the Layer Up challenge.
Am planning this for flight to Austin in March --
it's close to what I wore flying home from NYC
a couple of weeks ago.
Very comfortable and not too schlubby,
judging from these photos.
Here you can see the dress over the pants clearly.
I might remove the side seam pockets --
they look stupid and I don't use them.
Thus concludes a week of another fun fashion challenge from Megan and Keely. I think the Tues LACMA outfit was my favorite. Or is it Monday's? No, wait, Thursday's! Which one do you like best?
Here's a visual recap of the week:

Layer Up - Jacket over Cardigan

Too much.
Even for me!
Found this giant cardigan
and it was SO comfy!

It was such a warm day,
I ended up ditching the jacket
and using a blue scarf instead.
Gotta love SoCal winter weather.

Layer Up - Sleeveless over Sleeve

Thursday's layering challenge was supposed to involve a vest. I don't own any vests, but since vests are sleeveless, I did sleeveless layering. I'm also starting to road test outfits for the TxSC bloggers' conference in Austin in March. So looking forward to that! We have our flights, our room and a car booked. Yee-ha!

Layer Up - Long over Long

a very odd outfit
the mix of colors and patterns
gave me great joy
but not comfortable
and not warm enough for the office

Where In the World: LACMA // Layer Up: Cropped over Long

click on images to see bigger
Layer Up:
rayon/silk Tibetan scarf
tee from work
Desigual skirt
poly chiffon skirt that I made
Deborah and I had a field trip to LACMA to see the Rodarte / Fra Angelico "exhibition"
LACMA sure mislead us in their promotional materials on this one! I thought it was going to be the entire Sp/Sum 2012 collection (which Rodarte is donating to the museum). NOT. It was a few pieces in the middle of the Italian Renaissance gallery, with nary a Fra Angelico to be seen. Sheesh. Of course couldn't take photos of the gowns and I came prepared with a sketchbook. A very very tiny sketchbook. Oops. (It was so cute when I saw it at Staples).
did more sketches, but they are TOO SMALL
I can hardly tell what things are myself
after studying the gowns,
we looked at the pieces on the walls
GREAT STUFF!
had no memory of all the patterns and texture
on the art of this era
we are going to return with our better cameras --
only had the iPhone
Sevres
we then scoured the 3rd floor for more eye candy
and wound up in the Decorative Arts section
sometimes this stuff is too over the top for me,
but it was perfect for our mood at the time
