Sonic Sunday: Mary Foster Conklin

PURCHASED/ GIFTED/ LINKS/
Meet Ms Mary Foster Conklin:

Isn't she divine?
A voice like velvet, that one.

I saw her perform on a very wet Saturday night with Mark Winkler at Vitello's in Studio City.
Mary hails from NYC, and it was a treat to see her on the left coast.
You New Yorkers -- be sure to get on Mary's email list so you can catch her next gig.
She has CDs/digital downloads available for the rest of us.

She graduated a year after me from Emma Willard (our high school).
Her transformation into a stellar chanteuse was forged through tough life transitions.
I'm so happy that we've reconnected.

Mary wanted me to tell you that she's wearing a $20 Norma Kamali for Walmart dress.
Mary is one of my angels. She quickly knit up two chemo caps for me when I needed them back in 2010.

Here's what I wore for the gig:

My dupatta (indian scarf) is secondhand from Sahara Vintage Boutique, in Artesia.
All items sold there have been donated and a percent of the proceeds benefit the Sahara organization,
which helps battered women in the SoCal South Asian community
Linking up all over the internet, because I'm that kind of gal.

52 Pick-me-up: Go Dotty

PURCHASED/ GIFTED/ LINKS/

Dots are this week's theme.

If you are regular, you are well aware of the many dotted socks that I own.
You've also seen this skirt a lot.

Glamor shot, so that I can join Style Crone's Hat Attack:
I'm still swamped with work, so I'll keep this short. Got dots?

CMYK Day

PURCHASED/ PURLOINED/ GIFTED/ LINKS/
Yes, I really did wear this to work yesterday.
It started with some bright blue lounge pants with pink stitching (courtesy of the work sample box, of course. I wouldn't PAY for something like that!). Then the funky socks came out and the pants stayed home. And MAYBE the blue-pants-under-pink-dot-skirt combo was too over the top, even for me.
Now that I see it in a photo? Not as crazy as I thought!
As I was putting this post together, I realized I missed a yellow scarf opportunity.
So this morning I put almost everything on again with the scarf added.
CMYK head-to-toe!

Field notes:
Only one workplace comment on this look, from Robert, who had returned to interview (after a seven year absence):
"You look the same." "Yes, I still dress like a clown."

52 Pick-me-up: Get Layered

CREATED/ PURCHASED/ PURLOINED/ LINKS/
This week for 52 Pick-me-up, see how many layers you can pile on.
Northern hemisphere, layers to keep to warm. Southern, floaty light layers.
Here's my version:
scarf -- piece of Italian rayon yardage, Warren Z, 1983
knit shawl -- Tibetan, Brooklyn
tunic -- my design, vintage rayon from Pilgrim Mills [closed], Providence
dress -- Old Navy, deep sale ($7.99)
leggings-- work sample
socks -- Happy Socks
creepers -- Fluevog, SF
I felt an 80's vibe wearing this. Maybe because I got both the printed rayons in that decade.
The black and white squiggle is sample yardage that I picked up when I worked as a sample cutter.
It was my first "fashion" job when I was at Otis.
I've made a couple of tunics out of the other fabric. On the selvedge, it says "'Parchment' a fabric styled by John Launay".
It reminds me of Parisian illustrations from the 50s.

And here's a rare closeup:
I wrapped the "scarf" on my head so that I could join in Judith's December Hat Attack.
Her linkup party is still open for a few more days, if you care to join in.

I'd love to see your layered look. Share below!

Mellow Yellow Traveling Skirt

LINKS/ PURCHASED/ GIFTED/ LOANED/ PRESS SAMPLE*

I got my chance to cavort with the Traveling Yellow Skirt. Launched by Melanie in November 2012, it's since been on a world tour. I paired it with my own Indian jingle-jangle yellow skirt. On top is the poncho added by Tamera.
In my hair is a crocheted flower that I got at the Granny Squared event at the Craft and Folk Art Museum last May.
Since it's a "thing on my head" I'll be joining Style Crone's next Hat Attack in October.
*my sunglasses frames are c/o DITTO
Meanwhile, it's Visible Monday time. Go take a look!

Also, I'll put in a pitch for this week's 52 Pick-me-up challenge, United Nations. I figure since the yellow skirt originated in Canada, has already been to Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and several stops in the US and Canada, it's doing its part for international relations.
