#SecondHandSeptember This Week's Thrifty Find

It's another Fluevog Thrifty Find!
The Fluevog Tate
All my September Thrifty Finds will be Fluevogs. I've found that many!
Because of the lacing, I can get my foot into this Fluevog style. His slip-on boots? Not a chance.
Believe me, I've tried!
With Grunge/90's styles making a fashion return, these are perfect, toe scuffs and all.
Thank you, eBay!
Now I just need SoCal winter. I will not wear boots in 80-90F weather.

#SecondHandSeptember Charity Shopping Like a Pro

Let's refer to the notes I took back in 2012 at the TxSC (Texas Style Council) Conference during a Thrifting 101 Field Trip to Savers:
Link to photos from the shopping trip
Can you read my scribbles? The most important notes:
Shopping tips:
Pay attention to fave areas, start there
Keep running shopping list
[Quality garments have] inside as good as outside
[To determine] when a piece made:
Zipper metal - pre 70's
ILGWU Union label will date [helpful link]

Things to bring:
Measuring tape
Hand sanitizer
Flashlight to see holes

Wear:
Tank
Leggings
so can try things on over

Wash everything when you get home
Biz for stains (if no metal on garment)
Dryelle [at home dry cleaning product]
How to remove smells from leather via Suzanne Carillo
More cleaning advice from Suzanne

Best advice of all:
Instead of measuring a garment for fit by holding it up to your waist,
hold it from your navel to the middle of your back!
genius, right?

#SecondHandSeptember Capsule Secondhand Wardrobe

I am a maximalist and don't buy into the capsule concept.
Instead, I'll pretend I'm taking a weekend trip packing as much second hand stuff as possible into my second hand suitcase!
Isn't this the cutest? I found it at the Goodwill in Austin, TX.
 Desecrated with stickers.
What's INSIDE the suitcase? Even I don't know!

#SecondHandSeptember Charity Shop of the Week

The Thrifty Goose in Providence RI is a good place for a treasure hunt. You'll find it in the basement of St. Martin's Church on the east side of town.
They have "special deal" days, with a color coded tag system which amplify one's savings.

On my last visit in June, I snagged a few men's shirts, a sari that I'm slowly transforming into a tunic, and six balls of chenille for a future weaving project.
This project is taking FOREVER.
Here I am (long hair!) with my Providence pals Vicky and Patucci in 2009 in front of the $1 Last Chance rack.

#SecondhandSeptember Online Secondhand Shops

EBay
I only recently started shopping off of eBay. I believe I held off from fear of getting addicted. Also the bidding thing was off-putting, annoying (getting out-bid at the last minute), and too tempting in the "getting invested in the bidding itself and paying too much" issue. I favor the "Buy it now" deals.
Then there are the eBay Alerts. A problematic situation in terms of my Fluevog obsession.
Every morning in my email this:
Those oxfords. The "new match" has been taunting me for at least a month!
Someone with a 7.5 foot buy them, please!
Craigslist
is great for household items
I got these flat files years ago:
[black lettering from original owner]
Then there was the day Severo discovered the "free on the curb" section of Craigslist:
disclaimer: this includes the broken washer and becoming broken dryer (on right) that we replaced
I'll leave it at these Big Two.
Maybe you have a favorite smaller site? (aside from Poshmark, which I discussed on Day 5)
Add it in the comments section -- OK to paste links.
Or add a visual/blog link to the Link Up Party!

#SecondhandSeptember My Local Flea Market

All hail the Santa Monica Airport Antique and Collectable Market!

A post shared by anne m bray (@annembray) on

I love this market and I could even walk to it if I got myself a granny cart to tote my loot home. Therein lies my problem. I ALWAYS find stuff to buy. I try my utmost to "shop with my camera" . but then I'll see some irresistible object. And then I have to impose a shopping ban upon myself.
Things. I hear their siren call.

The time I ALMOST successfully shopped with my camera. (1/2019)
Another time (2/2018)
Both times, bought things. I am so weak.

Another great find:
Ungaro silk shirt: $6.
link to post about it

#SecondhandSeptember This Week's Thrifty Find

Since I'm trying (and already failed at) a #NoPurchaseSeptember, my "thrifty finds" will be second hand items that I've recently rediscovered amidst my clutter.

Its easy! All I have to do is go through one of my boxes of stuff! And maybe put the item where it belongs! Haha.

I didn't even do that. I looked at my shoe shelf at all the Fall Fluevogs I've amassed off eBay and put on a pair.
(They're "Fall" Fluevogs because it's been too hot to wear them).
I got these in June for $49 and they're NEW! Absolutely no wear on the soles.
I love all the detailing. And they're super comfy!

#SecondHandSeptember Make Money from Secondhand

I have several friends who sell vintage items on Etsy for a living, others who do carboot or flea/antique markets.
I'll be featuring them on Day 30, Thrifty Friends.

Me, I sell my stuff on Poshmark.

I find it easier. For one thing, Poshmark deals with the postage, and sends a pre-paid shipping label. I recently did a private transaction with Patti (waiting to see her styling!) and the postage cost more than I thought it'd be. Oh USPS, sigh.

I don't make gobs of $$$ on Poshmark, I'm not about to quit the day job! I do amass a little bank, and then I use it to shop buy clogs. They DO take 20% commission, AFTER you've made the sale. Your listings are limitless.
Unfortunately, Poshmark is only available in the US and Canada, and only within each country (it's a customs/postage thing). Email them to get your country added!

#SecondhandSeptember Reasons to Buy Secondhand

Oxfam is the instigator of #secondhandSeptember and this morning I went to the source:

Inspiring, yes? I think that sums up 2) Reasons to buy secondhand nicely.
My first visit to a charity shop or thrift store or secondhand shop (that I remember) was the summer of 1971. I bought a red button down shirt with a Peter Pan collar (what ever happened to that?), a long sleeved thermal "dress/slip" (it was upstate NY!), and a gingham midi skirt that I wore well into the 80s.
[cannot find photo. Will add when I do]

But wait! Didn't I get my most favorite skirt ever at a church tag sale in Troy, NY in the spring of 71? I'm thinking maybe! Or not (after finding the post for the link).

Our first foray into "shopping" secondhand was probably raiding our mom's closets, amiright? We all tried on Mom's shoes. I swiped her striped Skyr turtlenecks. Bwahahahaha. Sorry, Mom.
